2009-2010 Season
Starting in 2008-2009, NFVB began offering a 10-and-under team to cator to younger kids just beginning to express interest in the sport of volleyball. Below is the information regarding the 10-and-under program for the 2009-2010 season.
Coach
NFVB will once again be fielding the 10-and-under team for the 2009-2010 season under 10-and-under veteran coach, Grant Reed, who helped coach the team last year. Grant is an excellent skills coach who has been coaching with NFVB for several years now. His own daughters have also continued to participate on NFVB teams.
Season Length
Our 10-and-under team begins practicing Thursday, January 7 and runs approximately 18-20 weeks, ending in mid-to-late April.
Practice
The team is primarily a practice team, meeting once weekly on Thursday nights from 5:30pm to 7:30pm for a two-hour practice.
Tournaments
The team does not participate in regularly scheduled tournaments like other teams in our program, but we try to organize an end-of-the-season “tournament” for them during the WEVA championships with the 2 or 3 other clubs in our region that also field 10-and-under teams. Last year, we successfully coordinated with other clubs to make this happen for our youngsters. It was a non-officiated, coach-on-the-court (when necessary) scrimmage tournament.
That end-of-the-season tournament will be posted on the team’s page here: 10-white.
Fee
NFVB has minimized the 10-and-under team fee by subsidizing it to keep the cost low for parents and athletes. The fee for the 10-and-under team is $250 for the roughly 20-week season. There is no initial deposit deadline, the total fee ($250) is due by January 8, 2010.
Number of Participants
The 10-and-under team can accommodate 10 to 15 individuals.
Age
USA Volleyball defines age groups for participation in “club” based on the date September 1. For the 10-and-under age group, an athlete is a 10-and-under if her birthday falls between Sep. 1, 1999 and the present. If her birthday falls between Sep. 1, 1997 and Aug. 31, 1999, she is technically defined as a 12-and-under by USA Volleyball.
We maintain an age definitions page that we annually update to clarify which age group athletes fall in under USA Volleyball rules.
For our 10-and-under program, if an athlete is technically not a 10-and-under, but a 12-and-under and is 10 turning 11 during the season, we have allowed those athletes to participate with the 10s on a case-by-case basis. We can do this only because our 10-and-under team does not participate in any USA Volleyball sanctioned tournaments. Otherwise, we would be required to meet the age restrictions in their entirety. But because this is an introductory program, we have tried to accommodate those just missing the age gap who don’t yet feel ready for the 12-and-under program.
Team Selection
Team selection is based on first-come, first-served. There are no tryouts for the 10-and-under team. Interested individuals should contact Lonni Wilson to be placed on the list of those interested in participating on the team.
Between December 1 and December 15, Lonni Wilson will confirm via email and/or phone call with all of those who have expressed interest in order to finalize the list of participants. To secure their spot, participants will have to mail or drop off a $100 deposit by December 16, 2009. The remaining balance of $150 is due by January 8, 2010 as stated on our fees page.
The final roster for the team is posted on the team page here: 10-white.
