2009-2010 Season
Below is the information regarding the 12-and-under program for the 2009-2010 season. NFVB’s 12-and-under program is geared at being an introduction to the sport for interested young athletes and their families. Many athletes begin their experience with club volleyball in our 12s program.
Coaches
NFVB has several coaches that participate with 12-and-unders. We have a head coach for each of our teams, and typically an assistant as well. Our 12s program is run under the direction of a master coach who plans and runs all practices. The master coach ensures that all of our 12-and-under athletes are learning the same skills.
Season Length
Our 12-and-under teams begin practicing Tuesday, December 1 (having had tryouts around Sunday, October 25). Each team has a little different length of season. The 12-1 team attempts to qualify for the national championships, which are held late June/early July. Thus, it’s season may run until around July 5th if the team qualifies for nationals. If not qualifying, it may end late May to mid-June based on another end-of-the-season tournamet. Our 12-2 team typically finishes mid-May, and our 12-3 team will finish late April, typically at the WEVA Championship Tournament (our regional championship).
Practice
The teams practice twice weekly on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 5:30pm to 7:30pm, a two-hour practice. All 3 of our teams practice twice weekly. For 2009-2010, we are not fielding a 12-local team (only practicing once per week), but are only fielding 12s teams which practice twice per week. We have seen the exponential benefit of kids practicing twice versus once per week, and have decided to move to that format for all of our 12-and-under athletes.
Tournaments
Each team, 12-1, 12-2, and 12-3, play a different amount of tournaments and requires a different level of travel. There is no posted exact number of overall tournaments each team attends, as it may fluctuate from year to year. However, one can expect 1-2 tournaments per month from January to April for all teams at a minimum.
The 12-1 team will carry the most extensive schedule, and will play tournaments in New York, Pennsylvania, and Ohio during the season. They typically travel to a USA Qualifier, and may also attend the National Championships (to be held in Reno, NV for 2010; they were in Miami, FL for 2009).
The 12-2 team will play one to three out-of-region tournaments typically, though this number may change, and overall plays 2-4 less tournaments than our 12-1 team.
The 12-3 team will play the least extensive travel schedule with all tournaments in the Buffalo/Rochester/Jamestown area. They typically play 2-4 less tournaments than the 12-1 team, and may play 1-2 less than the 12-2 team, depending on local tournament availability.
Schedules, once finalized, appear on each team’s page, posted here: 12-1, 12-2, and 12-3.
Fee
NFVB has minimized the 12-and-under team fee compared to our other age groups (13-18) by subsidizing it to keep the cost low for parents and athletes. The fees page lists the fees along with the deposit deadlines for the teams. The initial fee payment for 12-and-under athletes is due November 15, 2009 ($325) for all of those participating on the 12s teams. The final payment deadline is January 15th ($425 for 12-1, $300 for 12-2 and 12-3).
Number of Participants
The 12-and-under program can accommodate 30 to 36 individuals currently. We make every attempt to place every kid wanting to be on a 12-and-under team on a team. Over the past four years, we have placed 100% of the 12s who have tried out without “cutting” any of those athletes in the tryout process.
Age
USA Volleyball defines age groups for participation in “club” based on the date September 1. For the 12-and-under age group, an athlete is a 12-and-under if her birthday falls between Sep. 1, 1997 and August 31, 1999. If her birthday falls between Sep. 1, 1999 to the present, she is technically defined as a 10-and-under by USA Volleyball. If her birthday falls before Sep. 1 1997, she is a 13-and-under and may not participate in the 12-and-under program.
We maintain an age definitions page that we annually update to clarify which age group athletes fall in under USA Volleyball rules.
For our 12-and-under program, if an athlete is technically a 10-and-under, she may still participate in the 12-and-under program. At times, we have had 8, 9, and 10 year-old athletes start in our 12-and-under program rather than our 10-and-under program.
Team Selection
Tryouts for those wishing to participate in our 12-and-under program are typically held in late October (for 2009-2010, they were held October 25, 2009). Athletes fill out the same tryout registration form that all other age groups complete for tryouts. There is a $75 fee for trying out.
Tryouts is beginning of creating teams and team rosters, but the process continues from December 1 and December 15. Around December 15, the final rosters for each team are created and posted on the website. The process occurs this way so that our athletes have several opportunities to demonstrate their skills, and so that we can efficiently place on them on a team that best serves their skill level and the club’s goals.
If a 12-and-under athlete missed tryouts and wants to participate in the program, she should contact Lonni Wilson as soon as possible to see if there are any spots still open in the 12-and-under program. Athletes who missed the tryout will still be required to submit the tryout registration form and pay the $75 tryout fee (as this fee covers their WEVA region registration and USA Volleyball insurance).
Athletes missing tryouts will be required to submit their fee deposit asap, as the fee deadline is November 15. An athlete joining after November 15 should have her deposit in by the first day of practice (December 1).
Final Rosters for each team, as well as schedules, will be posted here: 12-1, 12-2, and 12-3.
