Are you bored and looking for something to do to improve your volleyball skills? We've got some options for you!

1. Do a Workout

Working on your health and fitness is important at any age. It’s best for you to start a routine early and take care of yourself. If you have never done a workout on your own yet, that’s ok! Now is a perfect time to start!

Here are some weight-free workouts that will improve your athletic ability and volleyball skills that you can do at home, in your hotel room, or anywhere else!

Core Strength Arm Strength #1
Leg Strength Arm Strength #2
Explosive #1 Agility #1
Explosive #2 Agility #2
Explosive #3 Agility #3

2. Watch Volleyball

Did you know that watching volleyball makes you a better player? Watch as much volleyball as you can this week to improve your volleyball IQ! Here are some things to think about while watching:

Who is playing the same position as you?

What are they doing in that position that you notice?

Do you do what they do? Why or why not?

How do they act on the court? Are they good teammates?

How do they act when they’re off the court?

Who is your favorite team and why?

Who is your favorite player and why?

What can you do during practice in order to be like your favorite player?

You can watch volleyball in many different places! If you have an ESPN+ or VolleyTV subscription, you can watch live or past matches anytime you’d like! If you do not have either of these, don’t worry! Many college and pro teams post their old matches on YouTube and some even put them on their website!

3. Write Out Your Goals

Although it may seem silly, taking the time to write out your goals and accomplishments will help you realize where you’re at and where you want to be. Writing down your goals will give you the best chance of success because this helps you clarify and fully understand exactly what you want to achieve. You can even write down what actions you’re going to do every day in order to accomplish your goal. Writing your goals is much more beneficial and are proven to be accomplished compared to just thinking about your goals.

If you’re unsure what types of goals to set for yourself, here are some questions to get you thinking:

Do you want to play after high school?

If you do want to play after high school, where do you want to go?

How old are you? Is it time to start writing emails to college coaches?

What’s your goal by the end of club season?

What is your goal over the summer?

What’s your goal entering your school (varsity, jv, or modified) season?

How are your grades? Do you have a goal for school?

What do you like to do other than play volleyball? Do you have goals there?

Do you spend time with your family? How can you make someone in your family smile?

Do you take care of yourself? What can you do to improve your health?

4. Go Play Volleyball Outside

Is it over 50 degrees? Go Buffalo!! Throw a sweatshirt on, grab a volleyball, and go outside! Call some friends, find a volleyball net, and play each other! Play games to 10 and then switch teams. There are a lot of public parks that have a volleyball net and court already set up, so you can see if there is one near you! If not, one of your friends might have a volleyball net that you guys can set up!

Worst case scenario: you don’t have anyone to play with! All you need is a volleyball and some time. You can still improve your technical skills on your own! Look up some fun ideas online or ask a coach what you can do! Some people got very creative during COVID quarantine… Have you seen this idea?

5. Sign Up for Our Camps!

Improving your skills and getting more reps never hurts your game. We have three volleyball camps taking place at NFVB throughout the course of Spring Break!
